Pawtucket - Slater Mill
A National Historic Landmark and Rhode Island icon, Slater Mill is a powerful engine for tourism, education and community. Built in 1793, Slater Mill was the first successful water powered, cotton spinning mill in North America. When a group of visionary business leaders and preservationists came together in 1921, they had one thing in mind: to save the birthplace of Industrialization in American. To this day, Slater Mill has consistently delivered its mission of preserving, interpreting and sustaining this important site. We draw visitors from every state and from 150 countries, serving approximately 40,000 people each year. With three buildings on site, The Slater Mill, The Wilkinson Mill and The Sylvanus Brown House, we know that our relevance as a museum is directly linked to how we engage the community today. This in mind, in 2008 the Mill launched the Jencks Education Center which will house the Community Guild Studios - a vibrant exchange that will connect the Mill's history of fine crafts to Rhode Island's burgeoning community of talented, professional craftspeople. We offer a theater, gallery and two gift shops showcasing art & craft from area artisans. A major initiative underway is the restoration of the waterway and our turbines to bring hydropower to our site.
